Target Audience Survey Results.
In order to relate to my target audience and as part of my target audience research, I have conducted a questionnaire using both open and closed questions. It includes questions involving my film trailer, and I will use my results to help me to make the trailer to the best of my ability and to suit my target audience appropriately. For my questionnaire, I will be using 10 participants of my target audience, which are males and females from the ages of 16 – 23. I have purposely aimed it at sixth form, college and university students as I believe they will be the best market and well suited to my film trailer. This target audience analysis contains and will reveal to you what my target audience looks for when watching a film trailer. As I am using my target audience, 2 eighteen year olds, 3 seventeen year olds, 1 twenty year old and 1 twenty two year old, 6 of who attend sixth form, 2 are at college and 2 at university.
My first questions asked my participants if they liked crime/dramas and whether it was one of their favourite genres. 100% of people I surveyed said that they liked crime/dramas, with 80% saying that it was one of their favourite genres. These results confirmed my genre choice. I then asked my participants if they found it hard to understand crime/drama films. 60% revealed that they didn’t
find it hard to understand them, with 40% saying they do find crime/dramas hard to understand. As a consequence of this, I will try to make my storyline/plot more straightforward so that I can appeal to everyone, including the 40% who find them hard to understand.
In my next questions, I asked what catches your attention in film trailers and why do you watch them. 30% of people said that celebrities attract them to trailers, another 30% said that the storyline or plot of the particular film trailer attracts them, and the other 40% revealed that the crime and action side of the trailer would intrigue them. 60% said that they watch them to get a taste of the film before they go to watch the whole thing, 30% find them interesting and 10% like the action. Therefore it is vital that I get the trailer exactly right to ensure my target audience would want to go and eventually see the film after viewing the film trailer.
I then asked my participants what their favourite crime/drama films were, with the most popular being The Godfather (30%). Next came Goodfellas and The Italian Job (20% each), with Scarface, Oceans 11/12/13 and Bonnie & Clyde all 10% each. As an addition to this question, I then asked what my participants like most about them. The results confirmed that 50% find them interesting, 30% are intrigued by the storyline or plot of the film trailer and 20% watch because of
the action.
Another question I asked my participants is whether they would buy a crime/drama film on
DVD. 90% said they would, with 10% saying they wouldn’t. To add to this, I asked how often my participants go to the cinema. 60% said they went sometimes, 20% said they go rarely, 10% with often and 10% with never.
Finally, I asked my participants whether their favourite celebrity would be an influence to them watching a trailer and eventually the film. 80% claim they would be influenced by their favourite celebrity, with 20% saying that it wouldn’t make a difference.
Overall, I believe my questionnaire has been very helpful in me making decisions about my
final film trailer. I will continue to use my results throughout the task in order to ensure that it appeals to the correct target audience.
